This May, Bonhams presents its spring American Art sale, once again featuring an excellent assortment of fine art from the 19th and 20th century, including works from the Hudson River School, luminism, American impressionism, the Ashcan School, modernism, illustration art and more.
“There is something for every collector’s budget, with works starting at $3,000,” says Morgan Martin, head of the American art department.
Paul Sample (1896-1974), North Broadway Neighborhood, 1931. Oil on canvas, 31¼ x 40¼ in., signed lower right: ‘PAUL STARRETT SAMPLE’ and signed again and inscribed with title (on the stretcher). Estimate: $20/30,000
“We have several great works of historic American art in the sale, and it is quite difficult to pick just a few. The sale is led by a large and important work by Marsden Hartley, New Mexico Recollection No. 8, executed in 1923. This work was painted during his time in Berlin, as he was reflecting on his trip to the American Southwest five years prior,” says Martin. The piece is expected to fetch between $400,000 and $600,000.
George Bellows (1882-1925), The Violinist Leila Kalman, 1924. Oil on canvas, 44 x 343⁄8 in., signed: ‘Geo Bellows’ (lower left) and inscribed with title and signed again (on the reverse, prior to lining). Estimate: $80,000/120,000
Marsden Hartley (1877-1943), New Mexico Recollection No. 8, 1923. Oil on canvas, 233⁄8 x 41½ in. Estimate: $400/600,000“Another important work in the sale is Thomas Moran’s Grand Canal, Venice, a sublime example in which the artist presents a sensory view of the architectural splendor of the city while also exploring light, color and imagery influenced by the Romantics,” he continues. “Though my personal favorite in the sale is William Michael Harnett’s Still life with Quill and Pipe. This work exemplifies Harnett’s mastery of the trompe l’oeil technique and draftsmanship. Each time I look at it I notice a new and astounding detail the artist was able to produce.”
Richard Edward Miller (1875-1943), The Blue Beads, ca. 1916-17. Oil on canvas laid down on board, 36 x 30 in., signed lower right: ‘Miller’. Estimate: $60/80,000
Other highlights to be on the lookout for are George Bellows’ The Violinist Leila Kalman (est. $80/120,000) painted in 1924; Willard LeRoy Metcalf’s 1886 The Swimming Hole (est. $70/100,000); Paul Sample’s oil North Broadway Neighborhood (est. $20/30,000) and The Blue Beads by Richard Edward Miller, which has a presale estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.
